Post-Retirement Work in the Public Sector
Monday, October 25, 2021 - 2:18pm
The State legislature has approved a change to the law related to retirees working in the public sector. Effective on July 1, 2021, Superannuation retirees may work up to 1,200 hours in a calendar year for a Massachusetts public employer. There is NO CHANGE to the existing earnings limit, so retirees are still subject to the same earnings cap in effect before the change to the law. For a fuller description of the earnings limit, please see the post-retirement FAQ posted here.
Bear in mind that there has also been no change to the earnings limits for retirees collecting Accidental or Ordinary Disability benefits. Those limits remain in place, as well as the requirement for annual filing of tax documents with PERAC.
